Ch. 1 - An Introduction to Networking
Like any textbook, Ch. 1 just eases the reader into the subject! This Ch. 1 begins introducing the vocabulary - "the talk" . You must begin this adventure by knowing the terminology. Already in this Ch. there are over fifty new terms. Don't forget to add the ones I throw in during lectures. Just make a note of any new terms you hear, and we'll include them and define them as we go.

Networkers of all skill levels have this in common: You have to know about setting up and using a number of different PCs, both hardware and software. Here's a resource to look up technical issues regarding PCs and software. Go ahead and sign yourself up, and set up your own profile. You'll know what I mean when you do it! http://www.myhelpdesk.com
Ch. 2 - Networking Standards and the OSI Model
This Ch. identifies the standards organizations and how they work to make the technical aspects of networking WORK. In particular, the OSI 7 layer model explains the role of each "theoretical layer" in data transmission. This is a difficult subject and you will need to be exposed to it multiple times before "the light of understanding" goes on... so start here. We won't beat the subject into the ground here because you'll see it again.... and again... and again!
There are no web sites noted in this Ch., but there's plenty available to further explain this aspect of networking. I suggest you start by checking out some of these sites, and study the one that presents the material in a manner most understandable to you!
The gentleman who put this tutorial or "cram notes" used this to prep for the Network + Exam, you can tell from his manner of communicating, this is a difficult subject, but one that must be mastered! http://www.gis.net/~yagah/nplusosi.shtml
Ch. 3 - Network Protocols
This is another "content rich" Ch.. Check out the list of new Key Terms on page 92 of the textbook. Again, don't let this intimidate you. Most of this will make sense soon! All of it eventually!!
Ch. 4 - Networking Media
Not just about wires, although this a big part of this Ch.. This is the lowest layer of the OSI Model. We'll have some hands on with connectors and cable identification in class.
Thanks to Janice for demonstrating her wiring skills! Thanks also to Angel for assisting in cable making!
Ch. 5 - Network Architecture
Topologies are the physical layout of networks. Some are simple, most are not! Large organizations have topologies that have grown along with their company and number of users. Most networking environments today use the Ethernet transport system. This and Token Ring will be a major area in any networking certification exam. Again, the vocabulary pages here begin on page 193 and you know the drill on this by now. You should be able to pick the correct term on a multiple choice or true/false test.
This is a good place to start learning about documenting networks. This years Shareware award for graphics programs goes to Smartdraw for their easy to use graphics program. It's $50 fee is not exactly cheap, but less than other similar programs. A fully functional 30 day trial may be downloaded from http://www.smartdraw.com
Ch. 6 - Networking Hardware
We're really getting into some interesting material here. By the end of this Ch. we will have examined equipment that is represented from layers 1 through 3 of the OSI model.
Cisco has a nice tutorial on LAN devices... take a look at their site by clicking here!
Ch. 7 WANS and Remote Connectivity
More about the differences between LANS/ WANS,and different transmission methods.
