Meet Your Teacher
Ed Sloan
I've been associated with HCC since 1982 when I started as a student in the Data Processing Program. I was the computer lab supervisor at the Ybor campus from 1986 - 1988. From 1988 - 1999 I was a User Services Consultant, a jack of all trades, and manager of the VAX and AS400 computers which were used for Academic Computing. I was the network manager at another site for 1 year where I learned a great deal of networking. In July 2003 I completed my "MS-CIS" Master's Degree in Computer Information Systems at the University of Phoenix. Here's the proof:
That's my wife, Jane, on the left. We celebrated our 35st wedding anniversary on August 11, 2008. Don't ask me how that happened or where those years went. I guess time flies when you're having fun.
I also have been busy studying and getting certified in the Microsoft classes I teach. I currently have 5 certifications with two more for the Microsoft Certified System's Engineer. I did manage to finish the Cisco Certified Network Assistant (CCNA) certification, the Cisco Certified Academy Instructor (CCAI), the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), and the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA). This wore me out, so I'm calling a break on any further certifications.
Yes, I'm older than most of you students, and consider myself extremely lucky for that. I don't mind saying my Navy days were great considering where I was and what I was doing. My most significant assignment was at NSGA Bremerhaven, Germany during the VietNam conflict and by some Providence, I ended up tere. Thanks to my $10 Kodak Instamatic there are a few pics documenting it http://web.meganet.net/kman/ctpics37.htm . Yes that really is a special request form I completed asking permission to "wear a mustache". Note, my division officer denied it because he didn't like them. The Executive Officer over-ruled him. Turns out I wasn't able to grow a very good one then anyway.
I enjoy volunteering at the Animal Coalition of Tampa, a non-profit, low cost spay neuter clinic. I maintain the computing network there and am active in the monthly Spay Day event with lots of hands on experience with feral cats. We always need volunteers. Ask me about it, and check it out at http://actampa.org/ I also have been looking after a colony of feral cats that hang live at a local restaurant and actually trapped and brought home a kitten that is now part of my family. Her name is Bennie, and you might guess where she came from.
